Move a Google Chrome device to an organizational unit

Google Admin console allows you to move Google Chrome devices from one organizational unit to another. However, you can only move only a limited number of devices at one time. If you have a look at Google Admin Console and check out the Devices Menu, you will be able to see the devices listed under it. There should be a way to manage thousands of devices at a time.

For the demo, we are only taking 50 devices, but in real cases, we can handle thousands of devices. We have created 2 OUs, Grade 1 OU and Grade 2 OU. Grade 1 OU has 50 devices listed under it. Grade 2 is empty. 

Through the Google Admin Console, we can transfer these devices by accessing the Devices Menu, and selecting devices to move. Click on the move option at the top of the device list. Then Select OU and confirm by clicking on the MOVE button. 

Rule Instructions with xFanatical Foresight Automation tool

• We will be dividing our process into two parts. In part one, we will be exporting the Chrome devices in a CSV list from /Students/Grade 1 Organizational Unit (OU). 

In part two, we will be moving these Chrome devices via this exported CSV list to /Students/Grade 2.

Part 1: Export Chrome Devices with CSV List

Rule Creation

1. Log in to your xFanatical  Foresight account with your Google Admin account. 
2. Go to the Rules page and click the New Rule button.
3. Select the Manual trigger from the Select a trigger screen.
4. Click Next.
5. On the Select an action screen, click the List chrome devices action.
   • Click Sign in with Google to grant approvals to xFanatical Foresight in Google Workspace .
   • Leave the default columns in the Columns field. In the Organizational Unit field, select /Students/Grade 1. Leave the rest of the fields as they are.
   • Click Review. 
6. Enter the Rule name.
7. Click Create.

Rule Triggering

• Click the Play button to trigger the rule. This process will take a few seconds.

Result Verification

1. Find the notification in the upper right corner and select it.
2. Under the notification message, click the View Log button to access the log details directly.
3. Alternatively, access the Logs page from the left sidebar. Here, you'll find a log of successful rule triggers.

Part 2: Move Chrome Devices via CSV List to Grade 2 OU

1. Go to the Rules page and click the New Rule button.
2. Select the Data uploaded trigger from the select a trigger screen.
   • Click on the upload box and upload the downloaded .CSV, wait for the CSV to be parsed.
   • Then you will be able to see the columns of the CSV.
3. Click Next.
4. On the Select an action screen, click the Move Chrome device to Organizational Unit action.
   • You may need to authorize xFanatical Foresight to access your Google Workspace account.
   • Select the Device ID in the Device ID field, and opt for Grade 2 in the Organizational Unit.
5. Click Review.
6.  Enter the Rule name, and click Create.

Rule Triggering

• Click the Upload Icon and upload the same .CSV file again.

Verification of the Result

1. Look for the notification in the top right-hand corner and click on it.
2. Click the View Log button under the notification message to access the log details directly.
3. Alternatively, navigate to the Logs page from the left sidebar.
