Introduction

In managed Google Workspace environments, the ability to install a page as an app in Google Chrome creates a control gap for administrators managing student devices. Installing a page as an app in Chrome is a simple feature that allows students to turn any website into a standalone application. Instead of opening the website in a browser tab every time, students can launch it like a desktop app. But in schools, this creates challenges, as students may install malicious apps or get distracted by gaming apps. Therefore, school IT admins need to restrict the Install Page as App in Chrome and prevent students from opening installed web apps in school devices.

In this guide, we’ll explain:

  • Why installing a page as an app can be harmful for students
  • The challenges it creates in managed environments
  • Available approaches and their limitations
  • And how administrators can manage browser behavior effectively using xFanatical Safe Doc

The Problem: Distractions and Uncontrolled App Usage

The problem is students can misuse Install Page as App feature to convert non-educational websites into app-like experiences. Once installed, these apps open in a separate window without browser controls.

For example, a student can install a gaming website or entertainment platform as an app and access it anytime with a single click, bypassing the school's browsing policies.

This creates the following challenges for administrators:

  • Students can get access to non-educational websites breaking the restrictions implemented by administrators.
  • Teachers face difficulty in tracking the students’s behaviour and usage of Chrome devices.
  • Students may get busy installing entertainment apps during class hours.

User Story

A teacher asks students to use an online learning portal during class.

Students initially open the website in Chrome, but soon they start installing games and entertainment sites as apps. These apps open instantly in separate windows and make it difficult for the teacher to notice and control the behavior.

Install Page as App is the problem

Limitations of Feature in Schools and Managed Environments

The impact of unmanaged app installation in schools can be significant. Students end up installing non-educational websites as apps and access them during classes and disrupts the learning process. Since these apps open in separate windows, teachers may find it difficult to identify what students are using.
This issue is commonly raised by administrators are shared below:

“Students install websites as apps and open them instantly. It becomes difficult to track what they are accessing.”

“We blocked certain sites, but students still find ways to quickly access similar content using installed app shortcuts.”

Block Installing Page as App with xFanatical Safe Doc

We offer a browser extension to enforce granular, real-time control directly within the browser. The browser extension works at the browser level without depending on backend policies.

xFanatical Safe Doc provides policies to maintain focused and secure learning environments for K-12 students. It offers a dedicated policy called BlockInstallPageAsApp to control web app installations in Google Chrome. This policy allows administrators to control app installation in Google Chrome by blocking all web app installations by default and only allowing installations from trusted domains.

The policy has two key parameters:

  • Blacklist: Defines which domains are blocked. Setting this to "*" blocks all web app installations.
  • BlacklistExceptions: Defines the list of allowed domains where installation is allowed.

The complete policy configuration is shown below:

"BlockInstallPageAsApp": {
  "Value": {
    "Blacklist": ["*"],
    "BlacklistExceptions": [
      "https://classroom.google.com/*",
      "https://chat.google.com/*",
    ]
  }
}

For more detailed technical steps, kindly refer to step-by-step implementation of Safe Doc.

Capabilities of the BlockInstallPageAsApp policy:

  • Automatically closes Progressive Web Applications (PWAs) after installation, preventing students from launching them.
  • Detects and closes already installed and currently running PWAs when the policy is enabled on student devices.
  • Restricts students from relaunching previously installed apps from the Installed Apps section and continue blocking access to those applications.

Important Note: The policy does not prevent students from installing the web apps. xFanatical Safe Doc blocks students from opening the restricted web apps.

xFanatical Safe Doc prevents opening apps using the Install page as app on browsers.

Conclusion

Since Google Admin Console does not provide a direct way to prevent students from opening installed web apps in school devices, administrators rely on alternative methods to manage web app installations. Native controls are limited to Chrome Web Store apps and do not restrict Progressive Web Apps installed directly from the browser.

xFanatical Safe Doc provides an effective solution by enabling browser-level enforcement to block the Install Page as App feature. This allows administrators to prevent students from installing and accessing unapproved web apps for better controlled and managed environments.

With xFanatical Safe Doc, schools can enforce browser-level policies, restrict unwanted access and ensure students stay focused on learning.
